The GRAND is thrilled to actively participate in the highly anticipated LobbyFest, taking place from the 13th to the 15th of September! LobbyFest brings vitality to city blocks and structures, infusing them with the vibrancy of ideas, individuals, and initiatives that shape our collective future. At The GRAND, join us for three special events.

Mark your calendars for September 14th and prepare to be enthralled by the fast-paced and captivating Pecha Kucha event. Originating from Japan, Pecha Kucha, which translates to "chit-chat", is a unique presentation method that emphasizes the power of visual storytelling. Each presentation comprises 20 slides, with a strict allowance of only 20 seconds of commentary per slide. This format ensures each presentation wraps up in a concise 6 minutes and 40 seconds, maintaining energy levels and engagement. This time, Calgary's beloved speaker series turns its spotlight onto the future of downtown, as envisioned by a diverse collection of notable locals. Ten Calgarians from varying walks of life will take to the stage to share their unique perspectives, stories, and insights. In the morning on September 15th, from 10am-11:30am, we invite you to indulge in the fusion of history and culinary delights with "Pastries and Past Times: A Morning at The GRAND." Kick off your day with a delicious breakfast spread featuring an assortment of pastries and fresh fruits. Enhance your breakfast with your choice of coffee, tea, or juice. At approximately 10:30 am, we will embark on the historical tour of The GRAND. This architectural masterpiece, standing proudly for over 111 years, holds immense historical significance and timeless charm. Immerse yourself in our rich heritage as you delve into the past and appreciate the architectural beauty of this iconic structure. 'Lobbyfest' is about exploring the future of downtown Calgary, and when it comes to the future, we shape tomorrow by reflecting on the lessons of the past. Join us on the evening of September 15th, starting at 6:30 pm, for an extraordinary exhibition - The O'KOSI Art show with narratives of Past, Present, and Future, as depicted by talented Blackfoot Artists from across Treaty 7 territory. This show serves as the perfect prelude to the O'kosi feature play, taking place in The Flanagan Theatre from September 21st to 30th. In the spirit of celebrating and promoting Indigenous culture, Making Treaty 7 will be bringing a delicious selection of authentic Indigenous cuisine for our guests to savor. To add to the ambiance, the local jazz band, "The LWC Standards Trio," featuring our talented Programming Coordinator, Nate Chiang, will deliver a live performance in the Lobby. The LWC Standards Trio - September 15th 2023

As mentioned above, we are clearly thrilled to announce that our talented Programming Coordinator, Nate Chiang, will be gracing The GRAND for LobbyFest as part of the highly anticipated O'kosi Art Show. Alongside the distinctly skilled Mark Limacher on piano and Jon Wielebnowski on bass, Nate, with his dreamy drumming skills, forms the dynamic LWC Standards Trio.

Drawing inspiration from the legendary piano trios of jazz icons like Oscar Peterson, Red Garland, Bill Evans, and Bill Charlap, their repertoire is deeply rooted in the timeless and cherished melodies of the Great American Songbook. Each member of the trio shares an unwavering passion for the rich history, tradition, and enduring legacy of this music genre. Moreover, they are deeply committed to the art of improvisational interplay, playfulness, and the spontaneous magic that jazz standards uniquely offer. O’kosi (oh-goh-see) - September 21st to September 30th 2023

This September at The GRAND, an exciting collaboration with Making Treaty 7 brings to you the production "O'kosi" (oh-goh-see) taking center stage! Directed by our acclaimed Artist of the Month, Michelle Thrush, this captivating performance dives deep into the rich cultural heritage of the Blackfoot people. Named after the Blackfoot word for 'fall', "O'kosi" epitomizes the transition into a season of unity and preparation, reflecting the resilient spirit and cultural continuity of Indigenous communities. 

Through mesmerizing storytelling fused with vibrant traditions, "O'kosi" escorts the audience on an evocative journey into the heart of local Indigenous culture. It provides a profound depiction of how Indigenous people are healing from the multidimensional and multi-generational effects of the Indian Act and the signing of Treaty 7. Featuring a talented cast of Blackfoot actors, "O'kosi" portrays Indigenous realities with integrity, humour, and hope. It's a performance that promises to touch hearts and open minds.
