TANECIA CROMWELL

Tanecia was born to a deeply rooted Afro-Indigenous family in the traditional territory of Mi’kimaki (Nova Scotia) and her lineage traces back to free Black Loyalists listed in the Book of Negroes and enslaved persons held in bondage in Canada.

She and her mother left their historic community in 1976 and moved to Toronto. In 1978 they moved to Calgary.

Over the years Calgary grew into an increasingly diverse landscape, but the experience of growing up away from her roots made it clear to her that there was a knowledge gap in what most Canadians were taught in school.

Canada’s history includes multiple generations of Black Canadians who also helped to build the country, but the history of families like hers, was unknown to the dominant number of people that she met. It fueled her desire to learn more about the hidden history of the Black population of Canada. She found a wealth of information that contradicted and completed the national narrative that has been promoted here and abroad.

Her exploration of Canadian Black History continues, and she is happy to share the stories of Black Canadian excellence, resilience, and perseverance. Because Canadian Black History is Canadian History!

Tanecia has spoken at variety of Black and Indigenous lead events, presenting historical information, and highlighting injustices that are still impacting people’s lives today.

On June 6th, 2020, Tanecia the spoke at the Black Lives Matter vigil, presenting the land acknowledgement.

She joined the Calgary black Network as Vice-Chair from July 2020 – February 2021 *In September of 2020, she did her first night walk with, and became a proud and vocal supporter of, the Bear Clan YYC. https://www.facebook.com/BearClanCalgary

January 2021 she was nominated for a Calgary Black Achievement Award.

February 2021, she launched the Black History and News Made in Canada page on Facebook Black History and News Made in Canada

She had the privilege to present the Oral History of Juneteenth at the official Juneteenth Recognition YYC Event on June 19th, 2021.

On the first nationally recognized Emancipation Day, August 1st, 2021, she Presented the Land Acknowledgement and Oral History at the Day’s Celebration.

In August of 2021, Tanecia was welcomed to the stage, by Wakefield Brewster (aka da Lyrical Pitbull) for her first public poem at the Summer Stage “Pitbull Poetry Reading Series” and is excited to be taking the summer stage again in the July 2022 series.
